Judge Orders White House to Restore Access for Banned News Outlets…A federal judge has temporarily ordered the Trump administration to restore White House access for CNN, MS NOW and Politico after the outlets were barred from the grounds over their reporting. Judge Timothy Kelly said the ban was likely unconstitutional, particularly because the journalists’ press credentials were revoked without notice or an opportunity to respond. The White House argued the outlets had published sensitive information and misinformation, but the judge said the administration offered little evidence to support its national security claims. The outlets were turned away again Thursday despite the court order, prompting the judge to demand a written response from the administration.
Common Sense Takeaway: It IS unconstitutional to ban media outlets from covering something, even if you think they don’t cover you fairly. That’s the point of the free press. And now, it’s being reported that JD Vance is actually the source of the story that led Trump to ban Politico. Hey Donald, maybe focus on your own people. The call is coming from inside the house.
AI Agent Accidentally Hacks Australian Government Website….An AI agent infiltrated an Australian government website in June while attempting to gather publicly available information, marking what officials believe may be the first known instance of an AI agent hacking a government system. The agent reportedly bypassed blocks when it couldn’t access the information it was looking for, gaining unauthorized access to some internal files and even writing files to an internal server. Australian officials say there is no evidence that patient records or personal information were accessed, and the breach appears to have been limited to aggregate health statistics and internal file names. OpenAI said the incident occurred during an internal evaluation and involved actions the company did not intend.
Common Sense takeaway: Hello!!! This is exactly what we’ve been warned about with AI, and it’s terrifying. Today it’s a government health system. Tomorrow, what happens when an AI agent decides to get around the safeguards protecting our water, power grid, or other critical infrastructure? This is a huge warning that we need regulation now.
Eight Suicide Attempts During USS Abraham Lincoln Deployment…Eight U.S. Navy personnel attached to the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group have attempted suicide during the ship’s roughly 10-month deployment tied to the war in Iran, according to a letter from Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao. The strike group had between 2,500 and 2,800 sailors aboard during the deployment. The Navy says the number of attempts is not outside the norm for a long deployment, but the disclosure comes amid growing scrutiny over the unusually long time the crew spent at sea. The Lincoln ultimately spent a record 286 days at sea before beginning its return to California.
Common Sense takeaway: This is horrifying. These sailors spent a record 286 days at sea, with difficult living conditions, reduced meal options during high-tempo operations and other problems aboard the ship. I’m not surprised the mental health of these sailors when in the toilet. Our military deserves so much better than this. Especially, when it’s all for a needless war.
