Happy Friday and welcome back to today’s edition of Common Sense with Ally Sammarco—your daily briefing on U.S. politics. Let’s break it down.
Comey Indicted in Retribution Play….Former FBI Director James Comey was indicted today on charges of making a false statement to Congress and obstructing a congressional proceeding—charges many people view as politically motivated retaliation for his role in the Russia investigation. Comey responded by declaring his innocence and calling for a trial. Trump, meanwhile, applauded the move as “justice in America.”
Common Sense takeaway: Charging your political enemies when you’re in power is not justice, it’s weaponizing the legal system. In a healthy justice system, you’re supposed to choose the crime, not the defendant then the crime.
Trump Rolls Out Harsh New Tariffs on Drugs, Trucks & Furniture….President Trump announced a sweeping new tariff regimen: 100% on branded drugs, 25% on heavy trucks, and 50% on kitchen cabinets and other household goods. The moves, intended to force people to buy American, are already drawing a lot of criticism from manufacturers, trade partners, and healthcare providers predicting price hikes.
Common Sense takeaway: As we all know, tariffs blow back the hardest on everyday people who suddenly see their meds, furniture, and vehicles cost way more and companies who see their sales plummet.
U.S. Proposes 1:1 Domestic Chip Production Rule….Amid rising concerns over dependence on foreign semiconductors, the U.S. is considering a rule requiring chipmakers to produce domestically in a 1:1 ratio with imports or face new tariffs. The idea is to force reshoring of critical supply chain capacity, but many argue it would be nearly impossible to enforce, benefit large incumbents, and trigger global trade retaliation.
Common Sense takeaway: In theory, it’s national security. In reality, it’s a protectionist tour de force that rewards incumbent giants and punishes flexibility in global markets.
Commercial Driver License Restrictions Tightened for Non-Citizens….The administration is rolling out an emergency regulation effectively barring non-U.S. citizens from obtaining commercial driver’s licenses unless they meet stricter criteria (such as employment-based visas) and pass federal status checks. The rule also demands states like California pause some licensing for non-citizens during audits.
Common Sense takeaway: This decision comes after a couple recent fatal crashes involving commercial semi-trucks, and it may be one move I actually agree with—albeit it should be established across all states, not just California. Now if only, we could get the same urgency with gun violence in America. What are your thoughts?
That’s it for today. Thanks for reading Common Sense with Ally Sammarco. Check back tomorrow for more.
I still think Trump is a moron and there’s no way we can survive another year with him in office. If the Klan Party won’t remove him, the American people are going to have to.
I know it’s been awhile…I try to not look at that much news because of these a*****es.
Have a great weekend Ally.
Justice under trump means no justice at all. He doesn't believe in "justice" except to cover all his own crimes. No one else deserves it to his way of thinking.
