ICE Body Camera Rollout Faces New Scrutiny….After two fatal ICE shootings this month involving officers who were not wearing body cameras, Border Czar Tom Homan said the Trump administration wants body cameras deployed “as soon as possible.” DHS says cameras have already been purchased and officers are being trained, but Democrats argue the administration has had ample time and funding to meet its promised July rollout. Homan also confirmed that future ICE vehicle stops must include at least one officer wearing an active body camera, though the administration has otherwise declined to announce broader policy changes following the shootings.
Common Sense Takeaway: This could have and should have been rolled out months ago. How many more murders is it going to take for common sense measures to be implemented? These are real people who deserved to live. Yes, body cameras will help hold these monsters accountable but we can’t stop there. Next up, face masks need to be banned and name badges need to be required.
Trump Slaps Canada With 50% Tariffs…The Trump administration announced a sweeping 50% tariff on many Canadian imports, accusing Canada of unfairly retaliating against U.S. trade policies. The new duties, which take effect in 30 days, cover a wide range of products including dairy, alcohol, clothing, furniture, construction materials, and technology—even many goods covered by the USMCA trade agreement. The White House says the move is intended to protect American manufacturers and pressure Canada to remove trade barriers, while formal trade negotiations between the two countries remain stalled.
Common Sense Takeaway: Once upon a time, Canada was our ally. Now we go for tit for tat with them on trading deals because our president is a child. Once again, American consumers will pay the price of these tariffs and then when they are inevitably deemed illegal, corporations will receive refunds, and we will get the short end of the stick.
Taco Bell Lettuce Outbreak Continues to Grow…..Federal health officials are still investigating a multistate outbreak of cyclosporiasis linked to shredded iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell locations in five states. The CDC has confirmed more than 1,600 cases, though officials believe the true number is much higher, while Michigan alone has reported over 6,100 illnesses. Although the FDA recently acknowledged that a positive lettuce test was a false alarm, it says epidemiological evidence continues to point to recalled shredded iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms in central Mexico as the source of the outbreak.
Common Sense Takeaway: These are the moments when we all wish there were competent health professionals at the helm of these organizations. Unfortunately for us, we have brainworm, bear-dumping, whale-head carrying RFK Jr. leading the charge on this viral illness, and he’s not doing a very good job. We still have no clue about the source, and no knowledge on how to manage this virus.
