DOJ Investigates Rep. Cory Mills….The Justice Department has opened an investigation into Rep. Cory Mills (R-Fla.), with multiple reports indicating the probe is focused, at least in part, on his finances. The investigation comes as Mills is already under scrutiny from the House Ethics Committee, which launched a separate inquiry last year into allegations involving campaign finance violations, sexual misconduct, and dating violence. Mills has denied the allegations, calling them false and politically motivated.
Common Sense Takeaway: When will Republicans call on Cory Mills to resign? Oh right, I forgot they don’t do that unless it’s someone on the other side. This guy has so many problems, one of which includes stalking and harassment allegations. There’s no reason to let him continue to roam around the halls of the Capitol. Johnson Backs Ban on Lawmaker-Staff Relationships…House Speaker Mike Johnson says he supports changing House rules to ban members of Congress from having sexual relationships with any Capitol Hill staffer, arguing Congress should follow the same workplace standards as most employers. The push comes after renewed scrutiny over reports about Sen. Ruben Gallego’s past relationships with staffers outside his office while serving in the House. Current House rules only prohibit relationships with employees under a lawmaker’s direct supervision, leaving relationships with staff in other offices technically allowed.
Common Sense Takeaway: A rare W for Mike Johnson, although I don’t believe he would enforce these rules if his own caucus was breaking them. Per usual, it’s do as I say, not as I do. But this rule would be a very smart move given the power dynamics that create a predatory environment in Congress.
Epstein Survivors Renew Opposition to Todd Blanche….Two dozen survivors of Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell’s abuse are again urging Sens. Thom Tillis and John Cornyn to vote against confirming Todd Blanche as attorney general. In a letter to the senators, the survivors described Blanche’s recent meeting with them as a “box-checking exercise,” accusing him of being dismissive, failing to show remorse over the release of victims’ identifying information, and offering no clear commitment to pursue additional accountability for Epstein’s associates. Blanche has defended the meeting as productive and acknowledged errors in the release of case materials but denied withholding information to protect anyone.
Common Sense Takeaway: Listen. To. These. Women! If they felt dismissed in the room, I can guarantee they will be dismissed outside of the room. There’s no reason to confirm an Attorney General who has no interest in pursuing justice for Epstein’s victims. Democrats, do not allow him to spend one more day in this position.
