Happy Wednesday and welcome back to today’s edition of Common Sense with Ally Sammarco—your daily briefing on U.S. politics. Let’s break it down.
Trump Booed at D.C. Restaurant….President Donald Trump faced a variety of boos and chants of “Trump is the Hitler of our time” during a rare public dinner at Joe’s Seafood in Washington, D.C. The demonstration interrupted Trump’s dinner with Vice President JD Vance, Marco Rubio and Pete Hegseth, and other officials.
Common Sense takeaway: When your dinner plans turn into a protest spectacle, maybe you should just stay home.
Democrats Win Virginia’s 11th District….Democrat James Walkinshaw won the special election for Virginia’s 11th Congressional District with 75% of the vote, promising this victory marks “the beginning of the end for Donald Trump’s reckless agenda.” Walkinshaw outperformed Harris's 34-point margin by roughly 16 points. The seat has been vacant since May due to former Rep. Gerry Connolly’s unexpected passing.
Common Sense takeaway: That’s one more seat closer to flipping the House, another vote to release the Epstein files, and it force Republicans to actually show up and pass things!
CDC Controversy Deepens….Former CDC Director Susan Monarez—who was fired after opposing controversial vaccine policy changes introduced by RFK Jr.—is set to testify before Congress on September 17. The hearing comes just a few days after RFK Jr.’s disastrous hearing where he accused her of lying.
Common Sense takeaway: Messing with public health is not science, it’s malpractice. This hearing can’t come soon enough and will probably be TV gold.
Supreme Court to Rule on Trump’s Global Tariffs….The Supreme Court has agreed to hear fast-tracked cases on the legality of Trump’s sweeping tariffs, likely to be argued in early November. Two lower courts ruled against them; now the question is whether he overstepped executive power.
Common Sense takeaway: Deciding economic policy via executive powers may seem efficient until it lands in front of the people who actually have to rule on legality. Unfortunately for us, we never know what we’re going to get from the five Trump sycophants on the court.
That’s it for today. Thanks for reading Common Sense with Ally Sammarco. Check back tomorrow for more.
Awesome Virginian Democrats!!
Re: SCOTUS agreeing to hear tariff case
This Supreme Court decision, another in full defiance of the Constitution, will be the next step toward its total embrace of Trumpism and completion of Project 2025.
